Historically the most import square in Nice, Place Garibaldi was finally lit up on a fine September evening. Only a year ago this square was no more than a posh roundabout. Now mostly pedestrianised, it is enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.
For the first time in probably half a century, Place Garibaldi is now also used for leisure activities, fêtes and as an occasional market place for the local painters and artists.
By 2010 there will be more Albizia trees, benches, and lighting. The façades of the buildings framing this beautiful square will also be brought back to their original splendour.
Access to and from Rue Bonaparte is now restricted to pedestrians only. This new layout, together with other traffic restrictions, has considerably reduced traffic, noise and pollution to the square and to the nearby Place du Pin.
More antique dealers are being encouraged to open up their shops in the "Quartier des Antiquaires" stretching from the square to Nice Harbour.
The harbour surface car park will be replaced by an open air swimming pool overlooking the Mediterranean and parking facilities will be built underground.
Pedestrianisation, open spaces, trees, and clean air are on top of the new Mayor’s agenda.
Public transport fares in and around Nice were reduced to €1 in order to entice more users like commuters, locals and tourists. This decision was an instant success and has considerably reduced queues, noise and pollution.
At long last, community officers are enforcing fines on dog owners who are careless about their pets fouling on pavements. Cleaner footpaths are now more of a rule than an exception!
Finally, between now and 2010 a large chunk of Nice Bus Station will be moved to the outskirts. The nearby unsightly car parks leading to Place Massena will be removed and replaced by lovely parks and gardens.
